What’s it like spending your birthday alone?
Looking back on when I moved to Scotland, I remember just how intense my anxiety was. The thought of not being liked, of feeling alone, of being so far from the familiar, it was all absolutely frightening. The uncertainty of everything and everyone had me feeling weak. It is a miracle in itself that I decided to follow through with the move. On January 12th 2018, I packed my bags and I left Canada for what would be a total of 6 months (give or take). My 21st birthday was on the 16th of that month, three days after my arrival.
How did it go, you ask? It went a little like this… The day I met all 10 of my flatmates, we exchanged information and proceeded to head down to the local pub. As we were all having a drink, one of my flatmates asked if anyone had a birthday coming up during our 6 month stay. Reluctantly, I gave in and let 10 strangers in on my little secret. Fast forward to 3 days later, I am summoned to the kitchen after a quick FaceTime call with my parents.
The final product, a Scottish box cake layered with half a container of my strawberry jam. Not sure who decided it would be a good idea to use the birthday girl’s jam but I was over the moon regardless.
